"Where's the Maths?"

Last week, Year 11 Maths students put on hard hats and high-viz vests and visited the new Academy building site. They were met by Craig Garood, the Project Manager, and some of the site's other professional engineers.

Craig led the group on a very interesting tour of the site, constantly challenging the students with his "Where's the Maths?" questions. It quickly became obvious that Maths was everywhere in the day to day jobs of everyone, from the bricklayers to the Project Manager, and many others based off-site.

Mural Paintings with Free-lance Artist Kate Turner

The project was arranged by art teacher Sarah Lines in conjunction with free-lance artist Kate Turner, who has worked on other projects at the school. Head teacher Brian Worrall suggested ideas for a mural painting project, for the work to be displayed on the hoardings around the Academy building site.

It was organised for 20, year 7 and 8 Gifted and Talented students to develop their creativity, imagination and painting skills. Also a small group of year 9, Roma boys helped with some of the designs.

The initial drawings and ideas were created by Kate Turner and Sarah Lines focusing around the history of Hillfields. Kate organised a visit to the archive section at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum. The students looked at old maps of the area and produced drawings of artefacts like the looms. They researched on the Internet and produced some exciting designs all based on a circular shape which seemed to be a common theme with the different groups.

Ten murals have been produced, the standard of the work is exceptionally high and each design is imaginative and skilfully painted. The themes are:

  • The Bicycle Industry
  • Coventry City FC/Highfield Road
  • Ribbon Making/Weaving Industry
  • Factories/Vernon Triangle
  • Swanswell Park
  • The Old City Gates
  • Canals/Transport
  • The Mayors - Sidney Stringer, John Gulson and Frederick Bird
  • Cox Street/Orchards
  • Old Alexander Theatre (cinema)
The project has been a great success; all students have enjoyed working with an artist and working on a large scale.

First option evening is a success

In January we held our first Academy options evening for Year 8 and 9 students and their parents. There was a tremendous turnout, and many thanks to all those families who came to support us. More details of our new curriculum and the options process are available in our options booklets.

New uniform finalised

The new Academy uniform has now been finalised, and Sportswear International will be working with us to provide all our students with the uniform. All students, including new Year 7, will be provided with the Academy uniform free of charge. For more details, click here.

New House system introduced

From September 2010, we are changing the way that we organise our pastoral support. All students will belong to a House, each with a House head, House assistant and an Assistant principal to support it. Students will be placed in mixed-age tutor groups of about 20 and the older students will help support younger ones. There will be regular House events, and each House will develop its own identity while still remaining part of the Academy. A number of schools and Academies have implemented this system with much success and we know that it will further enhance the good support that we are able to offer our students.

Academy building work underway

A turf cutting ceremony on 16 November marked the start of building work on the new £27 million Sidney Stringer Academy. The new building, which is being constructed on the existing school’s grounds, is due to be completed by September 2010 but the Academy itself will open in the existing school buildings this September.

Covering 13,088m², the Academy will provide general and specialist teaching areas, a library and a sixth-form centre as well as a large auditorium with retractable seating, terracing for outdoor performances, gardens and an ecological area. The new building will open its doors to staff, students and to members of the local community who will be able to benefit from the range of facilities on offer.

The main Academy building will be linked to a brand new sports centre housing a four-court sports hall and fitness suite. A second building – the Enterprise and Innovation Centre (EIC) – will provide teaching for post-14 vocational studies on an adjacent site, and will include a business suite and design studios.

With sustainability key to its design, the new building will include many environmentally friendly features such as energy-saving heating and lighting, solar-control glazing, and renewable energy sources to ensure that the Academy’s CO² footprint is kept low for the life of the building.

World Book Day 2010

We celebrated World Book Day 2010 in style at Sidney Stringer School. We held a bookmark competition for students and had a special World Book Day quiz for tutor groups. Staff designed and wore their own World Book Day t-shirts and our Reading Groups got together for a celebratory lunch that included a World Book Day cake.

Students roamed the school with a camera taking photographs of members of staff reading and staff were asked to submit photographs of themselves reading in odd places.

We were delighted that so many people from Keir chose to join us in our celebration of reading and thank them for letting us display to students that anyone can read anything, anytime, anywhere.
