World Book Day

World Book Day week began with us welcoming Ms Adam, our new library assistant, to Sidney Stringer Academy. We then showed her how we celebrate reading  in style by taking her with a group  to Warwick Arts Centre which was a wonderful and exciting experience, meeting authors and illustrators, including Nick Mohammed who performed magic on stage with two assistants selected from the audience. The show was hosted by Steven Butler – who wrote The Diary of Dennis the Menace.

The authors invited were Julian Clary and illustrator David Roberts, Nick Mohammed, Alex T. Smith, Holly Smale, Sam and Mark and Dame Jessica Ennis.

We were lucky enough to welcome the award-winning author, Derek Landy to Sidney Stringer Academy as part of our World Book Day week of celebration.  He talked about his journey from working on a farm to becoming a bestselling writer.  He inspired not only our students but others from primary and secondary schools from across the city. We thank Harper Collins Publishers for inviting us to host the event, and Peters Booksellers for providing books for sale.  All Derek Landy’s books are available to borrow from the academy library.

Another award winning author and our Patron of Reading, Ann Evans, spent the whole of World Book Day with us.  She ran writing workshops with KS3 and KS4 students across the school giving our students lots of tips to become the best writers they can be. If you want to ask her a question or need a tip about your writing you can contact her on www.annevansbooks.co.uk where she has a special Patron of Reading area for you to contact her.
