16+ Handbook and how to apply

Level 3 courses, particularly A levels, are demanding. To achieve success, students need to develop a self-disciplined routine and a full commitment to work. This is most likely to occur when students are studying subjects in which they show ability and genuine interest.

Our expectation is that students choosing to study A Level courses will have achieved at least a grade 5 at GCSE in 5 subjects including English and Maths. However, with some courses, the expectation is that the students will have achieved higher grades and this will vary between courses. Please see the 16+ Prospectus for full details of subject entry requirements.

For students to study BTEC courses you will need to have achieved five or more GCSEs at grades 4-9. Again please refer to the 16+ Prospectus for individual course entry requirements as these can vary.

Sidney Stringer Students – How to join Sidney Stringer Academy Sixth Form

In December of Year 11, all Sidney Stringer students will have a one to one interview with either Mr Martin or Mrs Chennells. At this interview, the student’s post-16 education will be explored in order to ascertain the most suitable courses for the student. For successful applicants, letters confirming their place are issued in February.

The 16+ Application Process for External Students

Students of all abilities and backgrounds are welcome to apply. As an Academy we encourage students to take up the many opportunities we offer and to contribute to both the Academy and the local community. We do everything we can to prepare students for life beyond school so that they leave us with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the future. We are proud of the rich and diverse cultural background of our Academy and Sixth Form and we aim to draw upon this richness for the benefit of all students through every dimension of their work.

A 16+ Prospectus and application form can be downloaded from the Academy website, or collected from the Academy reception. Completed applications need to be emailed to 16plusadmin@sidneystringeracademy.org.uk. The deadline for applications has now passed for 2019 - 2020 entries. Once your application has been received, a letter of acknowledgement will be sent to you and a reference will be requested from your present school which will need to cover:

·         Predicted grades

·         Attitude

·         Effort

·         Attendance and Punctuality

·         Involvement in enrichment or other activities

On receipt of a positive reference, you will be invited to an Open Evening to meet the Assistant Principal of 16+ and the Assistant Head Post 16. Following this, suitable candidates will be offered a formal interview after which, a place may or may not be offered at the Academy. All offers will be subject to an excellent reference, a successful interview and achieving the necessary GCSE entry requirements in the June examinations.

A Week in the Life

Every student who is offered a provisional place in 16+ plus will be expected to participate in our compulsory “A Week in the Life of a 16+ Student” experience. This week will give each student an insight into what life is really like when they join Sidney Stringer 16+.  You will begin to feel part of a caring environment where your academic ability will be stretched to its limits provided you play your part. Every student will also experience lessons and independent learning in their chosen subjects.

All students will be expected to complete all homework and holiday work set. In addition to this, every student will be expected to complete a Research Project about their chosen career. This will be a requirement of you being accepted into the Sixth Form.

A Week in the Life will ran this year between Monday 24th to Friday 28th June 2019.
