If you would prefer to purchase non-branded items from other suppliers or supermarkets that you customise this is an option, but Academy logos must be added as per the images on this page. Sidney Stringer Academy sell sew-on logos if you wish to purchase a black blazer or generic uniform items from suppliers and supermarkets which you can sew the logos on.
We have high standards of uniform at Sidney Stringer and expect all pupils to be dressed correctly and smartly. This uniform policy applies throughout the entire academic year and in all seasons.
The Academy recognises the value of having a uniform for the following reasons:
Safety – If all the students in our Academy wear a clearly recognisable uniform it is easy to identify strangers. On the way to and from the Academy it also affords a degree of safety as the students are part of a large body of young people who will look out for each other.
Preparations For the Future – Many jobs require staff to wear a uniform and even if there isn’t a uniform there is often a dress code. Uniform helps young people get used to dressing to a prescribed standard. It also helps them know the difference between formal and informal dress.
Value For Money – Good quality uniform is a relatively cheap way of dressing young people for school.
Relieves Students From Fashion ‘stress’ – An Academy uniform eliminates the stress placed on students to purchase and wear expensive, fashionable items.
Ready For Work – Putting on the uniform is a signal you are going to work.
A Sense of Pride – We all feel proud of our young people when they are well dressed in the uniform. Uniform and team kits also help students to demonstrate pride in their Academy.
Helps Raise Aspirations – The smarter you feel the more you believe you can achieve. This is the feedback we have had from students.
Governors will periodically determine the uniform requirements, taking into account the cost. This will be done in consultation with the Principal. They will also determine whether there should be a remission of the cost of the uniform for some students.
The Principal will ensure that the requirements are published to parents/carers, students and staff. The requirements and policies are clearly set out in the Academy prospectus and website; and will also determine the action to be taken for breaches of the uniform code.
Parents/carers will ensure students have the correct uniform.
The Uniform
Black school blazer with Academy logo on pocket
Black, short or long-sleeved V- necked jumper (not compulsory and must not be worn instead of a blazer)
White shirt with collar
Clip-on Academy House tie
Black school skirt or school trousers (no skinny jeans or leggings and skirts must be at least knee length)
Plain, smart black footwear. No writing or logos allowed
PE Kit
Black spots shirt with embroidered Academy logo
Plain, black leggings/trousers/shorts/tracksuit bottoms
Long-sleeved black microfleece top with Academy logo
Religious Dress
Plain black headscarf with Academy logo
Plain black religious hat (known to some as topi)
Salwar Kameez- plain black only
Plain long black skirts (no frills or patterns)
Students must wear Blazer tie and shirt with religious dress
Post 16+ Dress
16+ students will need to dress smartly at our Academy. This means that students will wear the following: –
Boys: Smart trousers, shirt, jumper, jacket (optional), tie, sensible shoes.
Girls: Smart trousers/skirt, blouse/shirt, dress, sensible shoes.
No denim is allowed
Religious Dress
Girls: An abaya – must be of one colour, discrete patterns and not to be worn open or as a cloak. For safety reasons, it must not touch the floor.
Boys: Jabbah’s are permitted on Fridays during Ramadan and on ‘Dress Down’ days.
Jewellery & Make-up
The only permitted items of jewellery are:
⮚ A single, small stud in pierced ears – no dangling earrings are allowed
⮚ A single small nose stud
⮚ A wristwatch
⮚ Necklaces should not be visible
⮚ One plain bracelet
⮚ One plain ring
Make up
The Academy allows minimal make-up.
False nails are not permitted.
Outdoor Wear in Classrooms
Coats and other outdoor wear should not be worn around the academy during the day.
Bags
Students will need a bag to carry books, Chromebook and equipment to and from the Academy. A suitable bag will be needed for PE kit.
Compliance
No other items are permitted within the Academy. If there is any reason why a student cannot conform to uniform regulations contact should be made with the relevant Year Lead.
Students who are inappropriately dressed will be sent home to change wherever possible. If this is not possible then they will be expected to work in the Reflection room until the correct uniform is available. The Academy will do whatever it can to support families with obtaining the correct uniform.
Religious Dress
The Academy recognises that some students may wish to wear distinctive garments for religious reasons.
No dress will be allowed that covers any part of the face from forehead to neck in the interests of safety.
It is vital that the Academy staff can recognise at all times who is who in the Academy.
Current guidelines permit the following:
Religious head covering may be worn but must be plain, black with the Academy logo on
Salwar Kameez – plain black only
Plain long black skirts (no frills or patterns)
Tie, Blazer and shirt must still be worn.
Second Hand Uniform
Sidney Stringer Academy have limited supplies of second hand uniform available. For further information please contact your child’s Head of Year

In determining and implementing the uniform policy the Academy will take account of the equal opportunities policy.
Exceptions to these expectations can be made on the basis of disability, race, sex, or religion. Please speak to your child’s / ward’s Head of Year if you wish to discuss such exceptions.
