Student Voice and Leadership

Student voice acknowledges that students have unique perspectives on learning, teaching, and schooling, and should have the opportunity to actively shape their own education.  It involves students actively participating in our academy, the local community and the education system, contributing to decision making processes and collectively influencing outcomes by putting forward their views, concerns and ideas. At Sidney Stringer Academy, this is facilitated through the student council.

Student Voice

Student voice from council meetings is taken on a continual basis specific council meetings, at half termly meetings, via email, verbally and during tutor time.  It is all analysed and acted upon, with SLT representing the views to ALT, ALT discussing and reacting to issues raised and SLT then feeding back to all students. 

Student voice is formally taken multiple times throughout the school year for different reasons. When there are proposed changes to the Academy, students are given an opportunity to voice their opinions. 

Every two months, students complete a wellbeing, resilience and independence survey. The questions are taken from recognised sources who conduct research on wellbeing. The Academy Leaders use this survey to address student needs.

Student Leadership

Our mission with regards to student leadership is to ensure that all students experience meaningful leadership roles throughout their time at the Academy, contributing to school life in ways that reflects our DRIVE values. By embedding leadership opportunities across the whole school community, we prepare our students to thrive as empowered, compassionate, and resilient individuals in the wider world.

Members of the student leadership team carry out duties at lunch and break.  All council members receive training for their roles: some is done by members of the academy, some if done by working with external agencies (Eg: mental-health champions).  They display the academy DRIVE values at all times. All groups meet together at least once per half term and there are separate meetings for the specific councils, with agendas and minutes produced. We ensure that our student leaders are representative of our school demographic.
